DIY Tuesday: Felt Easter Egg Warmers | Gör-det-själv-tisdag: Äggvärmare i filt till påsk

Easter is actually upon us, even though it doesn't quite feel like it. Too snowy, by far... But what's better than staying inside making some Easter craft when it's too icy outside? This is my favorite from last year, they are based on the egg warmers we used in my family when I was a kid. I shared the tutorial last year, you can find it here.

Snart är det påsk även om det inte alls känns så. Alldeles för snöigt... Men vad är väl bättre än att stanna inne och påskpyssla när det är för isigt och kallt ute? Det här är min favorit från förra året, de är baserade på äggvärmarna vi använde till påsk när jag var liten. Jag lade upp en beskrivning förra året, den kan du hitta här.

DIY Tuesday: A Wool Bracelet | Gör-det-själv-tisdag: Ett armband i merinoull

I learned a really great tip on the craft fair I went to a few weeks ago. It's a genius, and very easy!, way of making felted wool pearls without having to use a washing machine! So brilliant.

Jag lärde mig ett helt bra trick på syfestivalen jag var på för ett par veckor sedan. Det är ett genialiskt, och mycket enkelt!, sätt att göra ullbollar utan att behöva använda tvättmaskin. Helt briljant.

You need this: A bowl. Hot water (with a little soap if you like). A tea ball. Merino wool (works best for this method).

Du behöver: En skål. Varmt vatten (med lite såpa om du vill). En teboll. Merinoull (funkar bäst med denna metod).

Make a piece of the wool into a puffy ball. Dip it in the water and let it soak for a second, then put it in the tea ball. I wanted quite small pearls since I wanted to make a bracelet, so I cut 0,4 inches from the wool. As long as you make all pieces the same size, it doesn't really matter how much you use.

Move the tea ball a little back and forth in the water so that the wool starts to make a pearl. After a minute, start whisking a little faster. Continue until the wool is shaped like a ball. Take it out of the tea ball and roll it very gently between your palms. When the ball starts to dry, you can roll it more firm. The more you press, the harder the pearl will be. You decide.

Dra ut en bit ull till en fluffig boll. Doppa ullbollen i vattnet och låt den bli genomblöt. Lägg den i tebollen. Jag ville göra ganska små pärlor eftersom jag skulle göra ett armband, så jag klippte ca 1 cm av ullen. Så länge som du klipper lika stora bitar av ullen spelar det inte så stor roll hur stora bitar du tar.

Rör tebollen fram och tillbaka i vattnet till ullen börjar bli formad som en boll. Efter en minut, rör lite fortare. Fortsätt till ullen är helt bollformad. Ta upp den ur vattnet och ut ur tebollen och rulla försiktigt mellan handflatorna. När bollen torkat lite kan du rulla hårdare. Ju mer du rullar, desto hårdare kommer pärlan att bli. Du bestämmer.

Then you're done! Put aside and let dry overnight, then put it on an elastic. I bought the wool from Ganell, and you can make all sort of things with the wool. Necklaces, bracelets, coasters, carpets, you name it. And it's so easy even a five year old can do it! Gotta love it.

Sedan är du klar! Lägg pärlan åt sidan och låt torka över natten, trä sedan upp på en elastisk tråd. Jag köpte ullen från Ganell, och man kan göra massor av saker med den. Halsband, armband, underlägg, mattor, vad du vill. Och det är så enkelt att t o m en femåring kan göra det. Gillart.

I've had to take a little blog break lately. Partly due to a lot to do at work, partly because I just lost the inspiration to blog. I am still not sure of how to move on, we'll see what happens. I guess it's like that sometimes. Have you been there too?

Jag har tagit en liten bloggpaus på sistone. Delvis för att det är så mycket att göra på jobbet, delvis för att jag tappat blogginspirationen. Jag vet inte riktigt hur jag ska gå vidare, men det ordnar sig nog. Gissningsvis är det så ibland. Har du känt så också?

Take along game :: We're leaving for a one week ski trip next weekend, and I've been thinking of whipping up a few take along games. This checkers/tic tac toe one by Dana made it is one of my favorites. Not only because it's made out of felt. But also because it's so pretty! And seems like fun.

Resespel :: Vi åker till fjällen om en vecka, och jag har tänkt göra några spel att ta med. Det här dam-/luffarschacket av Dana made it är en av mina favoriter. Inte bara för att det är gjort av filt. Utan för att det är så snyggt! Och verkar roligt.

Car games :: We made a car bingo last year which almost took us through the entire eight hour drive. But to step it up a notch this year I might add some ideas from Prepared not Scared through Serving Pink Lemonade. Street signs and an alphabet sheet maybe?

Bilspel :: Vi gjorde ett bilbingo förra året som nästan tog oss genom alla åtta timmarnas bilresa. Men för att höja nivån i år kanske jag ska lägga till några idéer från Prepared not Scared som jag hittade hos Serving Pink Lemonade. Kanske lite vägskyltar och alfabet?

Summer house decoration :: You might think that we're all into winter mode since the snow still lays high around here. But we've realized that we don't have any free weekends left before Easter, when we'll go to our new summer house. A house that is in desperate need of so many things (love and paint, above all). So today we went to Ikea to get eight pairs of Alvine lace curtains. More shopping will follow, surely.

Sommarhusinredning :: Man skulle kunna tro att vi är helt inne i det här med vinter nu eftersom snön fortfarande ligger djup här. Men vi insåg idag att vi inte har en enda ledig helg kvar före påsk, då vi åker till vårt nya sommarhus. Ett hus som är i desperat behov av massor av saker (kärlek och färg framför allt). Så idag slängde vi oss iväg till Ikea och inhandlade åtta par Alvine spetsgardiner. Det första inköpet av många känns det som.

Summer house decoration :: What we need to look for now is a lot of hand made carpets. We got two really horrible yellow carpets with the house, they are great for keeping the noise down but I really really dislike them. So we're going to replace them with several handmade ones instead, sort of like a quilt for the floor if you like. We have five so far, and I will look out for more at fleemarkets this spring.

Sommarhusinredning :: Nu ska vi leta efter trasmattor. Vi fick två superfula gula mattor med huset. de är säkert jättebra för att dämpa ljud men jag gillar dem verkligen verkligen inte. Så vi ska ersätta dem med en massa trasmattor istället, lite som ett lapptäcke för golvet. Vi har fem stycken än så länge, och ska leta efter fler på loppisar i vår.

DIY Tuesday: The Advent Calendar | Gör-det-själv-tisdag: Adventskalendern

I know I'm way too late, and that everybody is really sick and tired of Christmas decorations right now. Out with the old, etc. But I'm so ridiculously proud of having finished the advent calendar, and I know you all have done nothing but wait for the final pictures and the details - so here we go!

Jag vet att det är helt sent, och att alla är urless på juldekorationer nu. Ut med det gamla osv. Men jag är så löjligt stolt över att ha gjort klart adventskalendern, och jag vet ju att ni alla suttit på nålar och inte gjort annat än väntat på det slutliga resultatet och detaljerna - så voilà!

Ok, so I went a little Swedish with the braided heart, the star boy and the Christmas goat (is that really what it's called? Don't know if I can trust the Internet on this one.).

Okej, så jag blev lite juligt svensk med ett flätat hjärta, en stjärngosse och en julbock.

And maybe also with the lucia and the saffron bun. All very Swedish and mandatory at Christmas.

Och lite också med lucian och lussebullen. Allt mycket svenskt och obligatoriskt vid jul.

Happy Lucia! | Glad lucia!

Happy Lucia everyone! If you're not Swedish, you probably don't know what Lucia is. Saint Lucia was an Italian saint that funny enough is celebrated almost only in Sweden, once a year on December 13. For us it's really connected to Christmas, and Stockholm has been filled with parents all day, rushing from one Lucia celebration to the next since all schools and kindergartens take this very seriously. Watch this program if you'd like to see what it's all about.

DIY Felt Advent Calendar - sew along part four | Gör-det-själv: Adventskalender i filt - sew along del fyra

Do you also have a lot on your plate right now? At night, we're making Christmas candy, Christmas cakes, buying gifts, mending kids' clothes, assembling everything for the Lucia celebration on Thursday, looking for Christmas and advent decorations, and planning for the Christmas trip. Among other things. I guess it's the same for many of you?

This said, I haven't finished the advent calendar yet... But I have many ideas for felt decorations that I will make during this week, my plan is to have everything finished on Saturday night. Wish me luck!

Har ni också massor att göra just nu? På kvällarna gör vi julgodis, bakar lussebullar, handlar julklappar, lagar barnkläder, försöker hitta allt inför torsdagens luciafirande, letar efter jul- och adventspynt, och planerar för julresan. Bland annat. Jag gissar att många av er är i samma läge?

Allt detta gör att jag inte hunnit klart med adventskalendern ännu... Men jag har många idéer för filtdekorationer som jag ska göra i veckan, planen är att ha allt klart på lördag kväll. Håll tummarna!

Another advent calendar | En julkalender till

Did I say that we have nine advent calendars in the house? Well, we do. It's a bit crazy, but we like them all. This one is a favorite, my mum made it for A a few years back. I realized though that I would create a monster by giving A twenty-four presents twenty-four days in a row, so instead I gift wrapped Christmas tree ornaments that he could unpack and decorate a tree during the month of December. Huge success, and the tradition has stuck with us ever since.

Sa jag att vi har nio adventskalendrar? Det har vi i alla fall. Det är rätt knasigt, men vi gillar allihop. Den här är en favorit, min mamma gjorde den till A för några år sedan. Jag insåg dock att jag skulle skapa ett monster om jag gav A tjugofyra presenter tjugofyra dagar i rad, så jag slog in julgransprydnader istället, som han kunde packa upp och dekorera en gran med under hela december fram till julafton. Stor succé, och traditionen har blivit kvar sedan dess.

All is well with the felt advent calendar, except from the fact that it's not quite done yet. But I have made some ornaments, and so far they are really appreciated by A. He has requested a Star Wars ornament too, but I'm not certain it's in my abilities to make a felt Yoda. We'll see. May the force be with me.

Allt går fint med filtkalendern, förutom den lilla detaljen att den inte är klar än. Men jag har gjort en del dekorationer, och än så länge är de mycket uppskattade av A. The Santa Felt Advent Calendar | En tomtekalender i filt

I love advent calendars. I think we have nine in total this year... (Don't ask me why I'm making a new one.) This is one of my favourites, my mum has made it and we always had it when I was a kid. You move the match one step each day until it reaches the Santa. Happy countdown!

Jag älskar adventskalendrar. Jag tror vi har nio stycken i år... (Fråga inte varför jag gör en till.) Detta är en av mina favoriter, min mamma har gjort den och vi hade den alltid när jag var liten. Man flyttar tändstickan ett steg uppåt varje dag till den kommer upp till tomten. Glad nedräkning!

DIY Felt Advent Calendar - sew along part two | Gör-det-själv: Adventskalender i filt - sew along del två

I've almost done my sew along homework! I have embroidered all of the numbers, and attached the buttons. What I have not done is attached the tree to the background.

Jag har nästan gjort mitt sew along-beting! Jag har broderat alla nummer, och sytt fast alla knappar. Vad jag inte har gjort är att sy fast granen på bakgrunden.

For Friday, it's again a tight schedule. I'm going to attach the tree to the background, attach all of the pockets and add something to hang it with. And finish at least one Christmas decoration to hang in the tree... The rest will follow during December!

Inför fredag är det återigen ett tajt schema. Jag ska sy fast granen på bakgrunden, sy fast alla fickor och något att hänga upp alltet med. Och sy klart minst en julgransdekoration... Resten gör jag under december!

Felt Advent Calendar - progress report | Adventskalender i filt - statusrapport

So, I haven't gotten as far as I would like with the advent calendar. At all. I have been at work things a few nights, the kids have been sick, and I just haven't had much time. So I have cut out the tree and am attaching the buttons. And despite it all have I decided to embroider the numbers to the pockets. Glueing felt numbers would be quicker, but I think I'll manage to get it done in time anyway. I'll try.

I'll be back with a new calendar update on Tuesday. Have a nice weekend!

Jag har inte kommit så långt som jag önskat med adventskalendern kan man väl säga. Alls. Har varit på jobbgrejor några kvällar, och så har barnen varit sjuka. Typiskt. Så allt jag har hunnit har varit att klippa ut granen och börjat sy fast knappar. Trots allt har jag bestämt mig för att brodera numren på fickorna. Att klistra fast filtnummer hade varit mycket snabbare, men jag tror jag fixar det i all fall. Jag ska försöka.

So I've finally - a bit late perhaps - made up my mind. This year I will make an advent calendar à la Brooke at inchmark. Inchmark was one of the first craft blogs I followed, and since I love Christmas as well as felt, I also loved her felt advent calendar. Of course. And I like that the kids could find something exciting each morning, without it having to be a new gift for them each day. They get so many gifts at Christmas anyway...

However, I decided to go for it last night, so I might be a bit pressed for time here, but if anyone would like to sew along with me, please do! I plan on blogging about this project on Tuesdays and Fridays, with the week's assignment announced each Tuesday. Fridays are just for progress report. All of the tree decorations won't be ready for December 1, but we will have them all done in time for Christmas Eve! Ready?


Till slut beslutade jag mig. Lite sent kanske. I år ska jag göra en adventskalender à la Brooke hos inchmark. Inchmark var en av de första pysselbloggarna jag följde, och eftersom jag både gillar julen och filt, gillar jag också hennes filtadventskalender. Mycket. Och så gillar jag att barnen kan hitta något nytt varje dag utan att man behöver ge dem en present varje dag. De får så många paket på julen i alla fall...

Hur som helst, igår kväll bestämde jag mig alltså. Så jag är lite under tidspress, men om någon skulle vilja vara med på en sew along, alltså sy samtidigt som jag, är ni mycket välkomna! Planen är att blogga om projektet på tisdagar och fredagar, med veckans uppgift annonserad på tisdagen. Fredagar är bara för att se hur projektet går framåt. Alla julgransdekorationer kommer inte att vara klara till 1 december, men vi kommer att ha alltihop klart i god tid före julafton! Är ni med mig?

Felt. In different colors. One large for the background. I, as Brooke, use the good stuff from Purl Soho. But any will do, really.
Embroidery thread
Buttons (I picked 23 green and one white, Brooke chose 24 white. Do as you like!)
A lot of Christmas spirit and creativity!

Homemade by Jill also did a sew along advent calendar a few years ago, her tutorial is great and you get a lot of inspiration from her and her readers as well.

Filt. I olika färger. En stor till bakgrund. Jag, precis som Brooke, använder den finfina från Purl Soho. Men alla sorter går bra så klart.

Knappar (jag valde 23 gröna och en vit, Brooke använde 24 vita. Gör som du tycker blir finast!)
Massor av julkänsla och kreativitet!

Homemade by Jill gjorde också en sew along filtkalender för några år sedan, hennes instruktioner är bra och du kan få en hel del inspiration från henne och hennes läsare.

For next Tuesday, this is what I - and you if you like - should accomplish:

Cut out all the pieces
Attach the buttons
Attach the tree to the background
Attach at least half of the pockets if you plan on glueing on felt numbers OR embroider the pockets with numbers

I haven't cut out the pieces yet, but think I will make the background about 19 inches wide and 50 inches tall. The pockets will be 2,5 x 2,5 inches in size.

DIY Bat Costume | Gör-det-själv: Fladdermusdräkt

I've actually sewn something this week! Halloween is fast approaching, and this year, A ordered a bat costume for a Halloween party on Friday. Luckily, I found a great pattern and instructions at a favorite blog, Dana made it (where I also found the pattern for the kids' beach robes earlier).

I used, like Dana, black felt and black poly satin. Other colors were out of the question, according to A.

Jag har sytt någonting den här veckan! Halloween är i antågande och i år beställde A en fladdermusdräkt inför Halloweenkalaset på fredag. Som tur är hittade jag ett bra mönster och instruktioner på en favvoblogg, Dana made it (där jag också hittade mönstret till barnens badrockar tidigare)

Jag använde, precis som Dana, svart filt och svart satäng. Andra färger kom inte på fråga, enligt A.

The ears were a bit tricky, I'll admit that. But they turned out quite ok.

Öronen var lite knepiga, det måste jag erkänna. Men de blev rätt bra.

And the vampire teeth kinda completed the look. Happy Halloween!

Och vampyrtänderna gjorde liksom looken fullständig. Glad Halloween!

Felt Baby Shoes | Bebisskor i filt

Today I'm going with the kids to visit my sister who just got a new baby. We are all very excited to meet our new nephew/cousin, and I have even managed to make him a pair of tiny felt shoes.

They turned out quite cute, and I bought the felt at Purl Soho in New York a few weeks ago. The pattern is also from them, from their blog the Purl Bee. You can find the pattern for free here.

They were easy and quite addictive to make, I think I'll have to make them in more colors. It's easy to understand why Molly at the Purl Bee made so many...

DIY Easy lion costume | Gör-det-själv: Enkel lejondräkt

Well, I don't know if this even counts as serious crafting, but for yesterday's kindergarten party A wanted to dress up as a lion. The kids got to pick any animal to dress up as, and A had a hard time choosing between lion and sea eagle, but settled in the end for lion. Phew.

I made a tail and ears of felt, the ears are supported with cardboard. A yellow t-shirt completed the outfit. Done! It was a success.

Summary in Swedish: Jag svängde ihop ett par lejonöron och en lejonsvans till dagisavslutningen igår. A vacklade länge mellan lejon och havsörn, men valde till sist lejon. Puh. Jag gjorde öronen och svansen av filt, och så hade han en gul t-shirt till. Klart!

The Felt Cat | En katt i filt

When I found the book KUL med tyger at my parents' house this Christmas, I recognized it at once. It might not look all that special, but I clearly remember reading it over and over again as a kid, dreaming of all projects I would do one day. I don't know why I didn't try any of the projects then, at least I don't remember doing so.

Anyway, the thing I remembered most clearly was that I planned to make a grey and white felt cat. So, almost 35 years later, the dream came true... The cat is here! Better late than never. It was easy to make and is really cute, as long as you don't look too closely at the stitching. And baby I loves it.

Now I'm ready for more, I have already bought the fabric to make a lion, and the giant ballon felt owl in the book is also tempting. I'll keep you posted.

KUL med tyger from Wezäta Förlag (1978)

It is translated to Swedish from English, but it doesn't say what the original title is. Does anyone recognize it? There are several books in the same series, about crafting with paper, yarn, clay, and so on.

The tutorial and pattern. Super instructive and clear, I wish I could find more books today that look like this.

DIY Felt Easter Egg Warmer -- tutorial and pattern | Gör-det-själv: Äggvärmare till påsk -- instruktioner och mönster

When I was little, we had egg warmers at Easter and I loved them. So, this year I decided that it was time I made my own set. They are super simple to make, and are made out of - wait for it - felt.

Below is a tutorial for those of you who'd like to whip up a few for Easter. I promise, this is a quick project!

You need: yellow, red and white felt, sequins, yellow thread, and glue. That's it.

Above is one of my mom's original ones, and below are the two pattern pieces in cardboard.

Fold the yellow felt and adjust the pattern along the folded side. Pin or mark with a special marking pen, and cut the two layers at the same time.

It might be easier to cut the folded fabric if it is secured with a few pins.

Cut one piece of the smaller pattern piece in red felt. This will become the hen's (or rooster's maybe?) beak and comb. Put the red piece between the two yellow layers, so that a bit of the beak and comb sticks out, creating the hen/rooster. Pin the pieces together.

With a sewing machine (or by hand if you like), sew the three layers together with one seam.

Cut out two circles of white felt (I used a small button as pattern). Use two sequins in a color that you like, glue them to the white circles, and glue the eyes to the bird.

Done! Easy peasy, right? Please let me know if you have questions, or if something is unclear. This is my first tutorial ...

I made a set of four egg warmers, but will probably make more. I have to buy more felt first though, I used the good stuff from Wollfilz.

Here are the pattern pieces, ready to print out. Make sure to print them in 100%, check that the measuring line to the left is accurate compared to your own measuring tape.
