DIY Personalized Tote Bag | Gör-det-själv: Personlig tygkasse

Have I told you that I work with children's books? My mom did too, before retiring. So in my family, children's books and reading are really important. I was always the kid that brought a book as a gift to my friend's birthday parties. Even though I at the time would have preferred to bring the latest Monchichi (remember those?). But my family are on a quest - to make kids read more.

So, since we are going to baby Lovisa's christening tomorrow together with my parents, we stick with the tradition and will give her a few books to start her own book collection. And what could serve as a better gift wrapping than a tote bag that will be perfect to carry books in, her own as well as the ones we hope she'll borrow at the public library?

Har jag sagt att jag jobbar med barnböcker? Det gjorde min mamma med, innan hon pensionerade sig. Så i min familj är barnböcker och läsning oerhört viktigt. Jag var alltid barnet som tog med en bok som födelsedagspresent vid barnkalasen. Även om jag skulle föredragit att komma med en Monchichi (kommer ni ihåg dem?). Men min familj har ett kall - att få barn att läsa mer.

Så eftersom vi ska på lilla Lovisas dop i morgon tillsammans med mina föräldrar håller vi oss till traditionen och kommer att ge henne några böcker som en startplåt till hennes egen boksamling. Och vad kan vara en bättre presentförpackning än en tygkasse att bära böcker i, såväl hennes egna som de vi hoppas hon kommer att låna på biblioteket?

I wanted the tote bag to be special and cute, so I made a stencil in plastic and painted her name in pink. I used the fabric paint Palett in dark pink and mixed it with white to get the right shade.

Jag ville att kassen skulle vara speciell och lite söt, så jag gjorde en schablon av plast och målade hennes namn i rosa. Jag använde textilfärgen Palett i mörkrosa och blandade med vitt för att få rätt nyans.

Strangely enough, it was hard to find a good quality tote bag without any print on it, so I settled for one with a heart on one side. I painted the heart in pink too. And made a tote bag for the baby's older sister as well.

Konstigt nog var det svårt att hitta en tygkasse i bra kvalitet utan tryck, så till sist valde jag en med ett hjärta på ena sidan. Jag målade hjärtat rosa också. Och gjorde en tygkasse till bebisens storasyster också.

Did you hear that the Swedish Parliament and Government did the same and gave Princess Estelle 200 books as a christening gift? Good thinking!

Hörde ni att regeringen och riksdagen gjorde samma sak och gav prinsessan Estelle 200 barnböcker i doppresent? Bra där!

Paper craft is fun and it's a great material to work with. Hence this week's Pinterest theme. And some inspiration surely came from the awesome site Mr. Printables that I just found. I had a hard time deciding which projects to put in this blog entry, so there will surely be a follow-up to this paper theme.

Här är fem idéer jag lagt upp på Pinterest på sistone, och de har alla med papper att göra. Jag gillar att jobba med papper, det är kul och rätt lätt att arbeta med. Därav veckans Pinterest-tema. En hel del inspiration fick jag från den fantastiska sajten Mr. Printables som jag upptäckte nyligen. Det var svårt att bestämma vilka projekt som skulle få vara med här, så det kommer fler pappers-teman framöver, var så säkra.

Summer is near, and even though this June has been the coldest in Sweden for 84 years, I'm still hoping for warm weather soon. And then I will use fans. Homemade ones.

Sommaren nalkas, och trots att juni har varit den kallaste i Sverige på 84 år hoppas jag på varmt väder snart. Och då kommer jag att använda solfjädrar. Hemmagjorda.

De här pappershusen är HUR FINA SOM HELST. Vilka färger, och vilken fantastisk idé! Synd att jag bor på en radhusgata där alla husen är bruna och ser likadana ut. Happy 6th of June! | Glad sjätte juni!

Today is June 6, Sweden's National Day! We are not that good at celebrating it though, not as in for example the US or Norway at least. But a few flags always cheers me up, and since my birthday was a couple of days ago I made a jelly roll. Very festive.

Idag är det Sveriges nationaldag! Vi är väl inte så bra på att fira det i och för sig, inte som till exempel i USA och Norge i alla fall. Men några flaggor piggar alltid upp, och eftersom jag fyllde år för några dagar sedan gjorde jag en rulltårta. Mycket festligt.

Some got Swedish flags, others got washi tape flags. I couldn't help myself. It is possible I am a washi tape addict.

Vissa fick svenska flaggor, andra fick washitejpflaggor. Jag kunde inte hejda mig. Det är möjligt att jag är washitejpberoende.

DIY Plushies. Or pillows. | Gör-det-själv: Gosedjur. Eller kuddar.

I love how this blog gets me to do things I wouldn't have otherwise. For example, if I hadn't decided to really try and post something each Tuesday at the sewing circle meeting, I wouldn't have made these adorable pillows this evening. Even though it took all of thirty minutes (I don't hand sew that fast...).

I found the ingenious fabric "Happy Drawing" by Cloud9 at Purl Soho when I was there a few weeks ago. It's apparently based on Ed Emberly's Drawing Book of Animals, originally published in 1970. I hadn't heard about the book, but I looked it up on Amazon and it looks real fun.

The fabric is fun too, the animals are marked so they are easy to cut out, and the pattern even gives you ideas of what to make of it. Pillows, totes, bibs, on pockets and so on.

I made a lion and a fox for baby I. The backside is in green cotton, the same fabric I will make his cot bumper in. I simply cut and sewed on my machine, stuffed them and hand sewed the gap I had left open. Done!

I am sorry for the bad photos of the finished animals, all day light is gone now...

Summary in Swedish: Den här bloggen är verkligen toppen - den får mig att genomföra saker jag annars inte skulle ha gjort! De här kuddarna till exempel. De hade jag inte sytt i kväll. Ibland är de enkla projekten också de enklaste att skjuta upp.


Men jag tog mig samman för att inte missa dagens syföreningsmöte, och har sytt gosedjur, eller djurkuddar, till bebis I. Tyget är helt fantastiskt, heter "Happy Drawing" från Cloud9. Jag köpte det på Purl Soho i New York, men det kan beställas på nätet också.


Baksidan är i grön bomull, jag klippte och sydde, stoppade dem och sydde den sista biten för hand. Klart! 

DIY Memory game | Gör-det-själv: Memoryspel

This is one of the simplest memory games one can make. Pick a few small stones, paint the memory pictures of your choice on one side. Two of each picture, of course. Let dry. Done.

In case you don't see what the images represent (ok, so it was windy and I had a large brush. Not the best conditions.) there are clouds, lingonberries, pine needles, spiders, and suns. All nature things that I can talk to the kids about.

I'm thinking I will let the kids paint their own memory games. That will be fun, I bet.

Summary in Swedish: Här är ett superenkelt memoryspel jag har gjort. Plocka lagom stora och platta stenar, måla bilder (två av varje förstås), låt torka. Klart! Jag valde moln, lingon, tallbarr, spindlar och solar, men jag gissar att barnen kommer att välja andra motiv när de får måla sina egna spel.

Felt Baby Shoes | Bebisskor i filt

Today I'm going with the kids to visit my sister who just got a new baby. We are all very excited to meet our new nephew/cousin, and I have even managed to make him a pair of tiny felt shoes.

They turned out quite cute, and I bought the felt at Purl Soho in New York a few weeks ago. The pattern is also from them, from their blog the Purl Bee. You can find the pattern for free here.

They were easy and quite addictive to make, I think I'll have to make them in more colors. It's easy to understand why Molly at the Purl Bee made so many...

Summary in Swedish: Min syster har fått en ny bebis, och idag åker vi för att hälsa på honom (och resten av deras familj). Alla är mycket exalterade, och jag har till och med hunnit sy ett par små bebisskor i filt till vår nye systerson/kusin.

The amazing outdoor cakes | De fantastiska friluftstårtorna

I have been away for the weekend, learning about new ways and ideas to get kids interesting in exploring the outdoors. It was super inspiring, and I have met more than a hundred fun, creative people that know everything about what's out there in the woods! 

And then there was also me. Who don't know everything, but got some exciting ideas for the year to come.

Yesterday they arranged a little celebration, and a woman who had helped organizing had made the awesomest cakes I ever saw. Aren't they over the top? Tiny details and fun solutions - I am mostly impressed by the lake made out of blue jello.

I really have to improve my cake baking skills ...

Summary in Swedish: Jag har varit på konferens med Friluftsfrämjandet i helgen, för att fortbilda mig som barnledare och lära mig nya lekar, övningar och sätt att få ut barn i naturen. Helt kul och inspirerande, men det som verkligen fick oss alla att tappa andan var de helt enkelt fantastiska tårtor som en tjej ur den arrangerande lokalavdelningen hade bakat. Jag måste verkligen öva mer på att baka tårtor ...
